Otter and Nuvi solve different halves of the same problem. Otter is a meeting platform: its notetaker joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, and it runs on the web, on Mac and Windows, on iOS and on Android. Nuvi, the AI note taker for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, records the conversation happening in the room and does not join online calls at all. If your meetings are video calls, Otter fits. If they happen across a table, Nuvi fits.
Where Otter is better
Otter does several things Nuvi does not do, and it is fair to say so plainly.
- Online meetings. Otter’s notetaker joins Zoom, MS Teams and Google Meet to automatically write and share notes. Nuvi has no meeting bot and cannot capture a video call.
- Recording a call without a bot. The Otter desktop app for Mac and Windows supports botless recording, which captures the audio of your device without a notetaker joining as a participant. Nuvi has no Mac or Windows app.
- Every platform. Otter lists web, iOS and Android apps, Mac and Windows desktop apps and a Chrome extension on its pricing page. Nuvi is iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only.
- Live transcription. Otter shows the transcript while people are speaking. Nuvi transcribes after the recording ends.
- Teams. Otter has workspaces, channels, folders, shared speakers, user management and, on higher plans, single sign-on. Nuvi has no team workspace and no shared folders.
- Integrations. Otter’s paid plans list Salesforce, HubSpot and Zapier integrations, and Enterprise adds an API and webhooks. Nuvi has no CRM, Slack or Notion integrations.
- A larger free plan. Otter Basic includes 300 transcription minutes a month, with 30 minutes per conversation. Nuvi’s free tier transcribes the first 10 minutes of each recording, 30 minutes a month.
- Longer recordings. Otter Business allows up to 4 hours per conversation. A Nuvi recording stops at one hour.
Where Nuvi is different
- No bot, by design. Nuvi records through the microphone of the device in front of you. Nothing joins a call, and nothing appears in a participant list. More on that approach in AI note taker without a bot.
- Built for the room. It records on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, keeps recording with the screen locked and has a “Room” microphone mode for several voices around the phone. See Nuvi for meetings.
- Apple Watch. The watch records on the wrist and hands the file to the iPhone, which gets it transcribed.
- No account, no email. The app signs in anonymously in the background with a random identifier. Otter needs a sign-up.
- Models on servers the developer runs. Audio goes to speech and language models that run on servers the developer, Ege Beşe, operates. It is not sent to a third-party AI service.
- Audio deleted after transcription. The uploaded audio is deleted as soon as the transcript has been returned.
- Notes stay with you. Notes live on the device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud, which the developer cannot read.
- Price. Nuvi Pro is $4.99 weekly, $14.99 monthly or $49.99 yearly in the US. The full table is on the pricing page.
- More languages. Otter lists six transcription languages. Nuvi works in many languages and detects the language by itself, though quality is not equal for every one.
Who should choose which
Choose Otter if:
- most of your meetings are on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams
- you want a live transcript on screen during the meeting
- you use Android, Windows or a browser
- your team needs shared notes, admin controls or a CRM sync
- you often record for longer than one hour
Choose Nuvi if:
- your conversations happen in person: 1:1s, client visits, interviews, lectures
- you want to start a recording from an Apple Watch, the Action button or a widget
- you do not want to create an account
- you want a note taker that never joins a call as a participant
- you speak a language Otter does not list
People searching for an Otter alternative for iPhone usually want one of two things: a cheaper plan, or a recorder for in-person conversations that does not need an account. Nuvi answers the second. It is not a replacement for Otter’s meeting notetaker.
How the two handle your audio
Otter. Otter’s privacy and security page says “Otter uses a proprietary method to de-identify user data before training our models so that an individual user cannot be identified”, and that this training is automatic, so recordings and transcripts are not manually reviewed by a human. The same page says no customer data is used to train the models of Otter’s AI service providers and that those providers do not store customer data sent through the API. Otter reports a SOC 2 Type 2 report and AES-256 server-side encryption. Recordings are kept in your Otter account, with audio playback listed as a feature on every plan.
Nuvi. Audio is uploaded over an encrypted connection (TLS) to temporary cloud storage (Google Cloud Storage, EU region) only so it can be transcribed. From there it goes to speech and language models that run on servers the developer operates. The uploaded audio is deleted as soon as the transcript has been returned, and a storage rule deletes any leftover upload after one day. Transcripts and summaries are not stored on the server. Audio and transcripts are not used to train AI models. Nuvi makes no compliance certification claims. Details are on the privacy-first page.
Neither product transcribes on the device: both need an internet connection for the transcript. With Nuvi, recording itself works without a connection and the file is sent when the connection returns.
Recording other people may require their consent depending on where you are. Tell people before you record them, whichever app you use.
